Letter: Good bye friend

An advertisement along old Highway 40 intrigued me so I made it a point to go meet Easy Jack in 1989 shortly after arriving in this part of the world.

We were involved in a racetrack and while running a shopper I stopped in to recharge my personal batteries almost daily. We didn't go drinking together, cruise nursing home parking lots together or even attend the same church and during the past decade we didn't even see that much of one another yet I considered Jack Welsh one of my best friends. He taught me that liquor; cigarettes and fireworks were good things to sell but were of no advantage to the purchaser or user.

He could distinguish between a '31 and a '30 Model-A Ford at 2,300 yards or reach into a mountain of clutches and pull out a 1926 Essex. What would have happened were he born in the age of computers God only knows but he could make a 1940 Underwood typewriter brush your teeth.

His record keeping included the date he changed the light bulbs at his place. If a customer said $7 was too much to pay for a part Easy would put it back on the shelf and raise the price to $14 — a guy from Canada eventually purchased once such item for $1,400. When we first met Easy he was on crutches, a knee replacement and a few months later we witnessed him chase down the mailman to hand him an out-going letter.

Easy was born at a goat hospital, kicked off his farm so others could have a lake and created a yard that brought in customers from Europe and all parts of the globe. He was the Kansas State Printer in 1968, a staunch supporter of states' rights and individual rights which along with hard work and honesty made this great nation.

I guess we all knew he could not live forever but were in denial that the day would ever come when the Lord would turn off the switch.
