Berklund: By the numbers: Dream Team vs. 2012

Sure their shorts may have been a little short and they might have been a step slow, compared to modern day athletes, but that team could play some basketball. Kobe Bryant started a debate more than a week ago saying the current U.S. Olympic team could beat the Dream Team if the two were teams could meet in some sort of game for the ages where both teams' players were the age they were when they were on the team.

''They were a lot older, at kind of the end of their careers. We have just a bunch of young racehorses, guys that are eager to compete,'' Bryant said.

Them are fighting words for Sir Charles Barkley.

''I just started laughing,'' Barkley said. ''How old is Kobe Bryant, 36? He's 34? And he's calling us old? At the time, we were only like 28, 29. ... Michael Jordan and me were the same age. We were both 29.''

Scottie Pippen agreed with Barkley saying he liked the current team but the Dream Team would win comfortably by 25 points. Jordan agreed with his long-time teammate.

''For him to make that comparison, it's one of those things where it creates conversation,'' Jordan said. ''I guess we'll never know. I'd like to think that we had 11 Hall of Famers on that team, and whenever they get 11 Hall of Famers, you call and ask me who had the better Dream Team. Remember now, they learned from us. We didn't learn from them.''

Obviously we'll never be able to sit down on our La-Z-Boy's with popcorn and watch the game, but we can take a look at the rosters and see who has the advantage.

Point guard

Magic Johnson and John Stockton vs. Chris Paul, Derron Williams and Russell Westbrook:

We don't need to see a bird fly out of a hat to know Magic steals the show in this one. At 6 foot, 9 inches he'd be awfully difficult to guard. The overall quickness Paul and Westbrook brings though would be interesting to see. The skill set Williams and Stockton bring to the table are about the same. Derrick Rose's athleticism and ability to take over games might have been enough to give the 2012 team the edge here but there's too much Magic in this show. Advantage Dream Team.

Shooting Guard

Michael Jordan and Clyde Drexler vs. Kobe Bryant and James Harden:

Kobe Bryant is virtually your modern day Michael Jordan. He has five NBA championship rings and with the addition of Steve Nash to the Lakers, he could tie Jordan's six rings next season. Jordan is widely considered the best all-time basketball player but Bryant isn't far behind. Where the 1992 team has the clear advantage is Drexler vs. Harden. Clyde ''The Glide'' Drexler would do just that against Harden, who was a no-show in the NBA Finals this season against the Heat. If Dwyane Wade played this year it might have been a contest. Advantage Dream Team.

Small Forward

Scottie Pippen, Larry Bird and Chris Mullin vs. LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala:

Larry Legend, sharp shooting Mullin and Scottie are some of the best small forwards the game of basketball has seen — since Lebron James and Kevin Durant. James and Durant are equally as large, just as good at shooting and a light years faster than the 1992 squad's. You can probably throw Carmelo Anthony into the mix as well as he will play both the 3 and 4. Iguodala is a pretty darn good player as well. The 1992 team's defense may be better at the small forward position but the overall talent the current squad boasts would be way too much to handle for the Dream Team. Advantage 2012 team.

Power Forward

Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and Christian Laettner vs. Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love:

The post is where the Dream Team would really have the advantage. Barkley led the Dream Team in scoring average (18 points) and the Mail Man is arguably the best power forward to never win a ring. Carmelo Anthony is a big undersized and likes the play on the perimeter while Love is too unathletic and actually matches up well with Laettner. This could have been a bit more interesting had Chris Bosh not been hurt or if Amare Stoudemire had been available. Advantage Dream Team.

Center

David Robinson and Patrick Ewing vs. Tyson Chandler and Anthony Davis:

With the Dream Team ahead in three of four positions it all becomes a formality from this point on. Robinson and Ewing are two of the best centers to play the game. Chandler's defense is strong and his knack to get rebounds and catch alley-oop passes are a plus but he's too inconsistent offensively and no one knows what to expect from the unibrow. Had Dwight Howard not been hurt and was available to play it would have been a little closer. Avantage Dream Team.

There you have it, old school beats new school 4-1. If I had to make a pick on who would win in a 7-game series, I'd take the 1992 team in five games, obviously. As they say, the original is always the best.
