Parsons: Upcoming activities at JC Arts

Even though we are looking at making some significant operational changes next month, this month has been super busy with no slowdown in sight until the first part of August.

Evening of Elegance; Art Auction and Sale

Whether you are in the market for fine art or not, the Evening of Elegance will be a night to remember. State of the Art Auctions is coming in to offer a wide variety of art work that will fit all tastes, styles and budgets.

Even if you don't actually purchase any art work, your presence alone will help us make money. The money that we make on the evening will be based on sales, but also on how many people are in attendance. We need at least 100 people in order to receive a guaranteed $1,000. The more people in attendance, the higher our percentage will be.

The live auction will start at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a preview of the art along with entertainment by the Gold Orchestra, hors d' oeuvres and a cash bar. This event is funded in part by a grant from the Geary County Convention & Visitors Bureau — www.junctioncity.org.

On Sunday, art work that did not go in the auction will be available for sale. The event is being held at The George Smith Reception Hall, 103 W. Seventh St.

Creative Spirit Summer Art

Our summer program for children ages 7 to 12 has been going phenomenally. It got off to a slow start, but has picked up and the kids are having fun. We just finished a week of exploring several different types of paint and styles of painting, concluding with one of my favorite project ''The Jackson Pollock experiment.'' We let the kids just have at it with paint in water guns, on their hands and feet and we let them fill the brush and splatter paint.

We have three weeks left. Next week is the wire and metal class, which is full.

Traveling the world

Around the World in 5 Days is a week of multicultural arts. Students begin in North America and work their way through most of the continents. The final week has always been a favorite topic for the children in past summer classes and in the after-school program; Trash to Treasure — a week of using recyclable materials to create new and wonderful works of art.

Summer Music Workshop

We have one more summer music workshop that was made possible through a grant from the Bramlage Family Foundation. After a successful workshop in June where the students explored African and Latin Percussion, this workshop will feature a week of musical performance using a STOMP format. The children will learn how to use everyday items to make music and on July 27, we all get to hear how well they learned as they perform the second of three concerts in the park that JC Arts is hosting this year. Although we traditionally have these concerts at Heritage Park, this one might be moved to The Gallery, 107 W. Seventh St. depending on such factors as the weather.

Final Concert in the Park

Our last concert in the park for this season will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 3 at Heritage Park. A local up-and-coming band, the Edge of Vengeance, will perform heavy metal covers and some of their own original work.
