Wood: Start saving early for retirement

I've written columns in the past encouraging saving for retirement. I was reading an article this week about a Consumer Reports survey that I found interesting, and supports the advice of saving and starting early. This survey by their National Research Center included 22,000 online subscribers who were in, or ready for, retirement.

As you might guess, top regrets cited by these retirees were starting to save too late and saving too little. Some findings that came out in the survey were a little more surprising.

Nearly one third of those responding to the survey said their expenses were higher than they had estimated before retirement, with only 11 percent saying expenses were lower than expected. When running retirement projections, determining the percentage of current income that will be needed during retirement is one of the steps. Around 70 percent used to be a common benchmark to use, but many experts now recommend using 80-90 percent of pre-retirement income.

Although some expenses go away when you retire, such as the costs of commuting, buying lunches out and dressing for work, they are often replaced by others. Travel and relocating when you retire can be more expensive than anticipated. Everything from gardening to golfing costs money, and people have more time to go shopping and spend more. In addition, as we age we tend to have more medical problems, thus higher medical bills.

Other regrets the survey cited were investing too conservatively and not diversifying enough. Those who invested very conservatively had smaller nest eggs. Retirees who said their overall investment style was conservative reported median savings of $478,000 compared to $617,000 for their less cautious counterparts, and one-quarter of workers nationwide were forced to put off their retirement in the past year because their nest egg was too small.

One surprising thing that came out of the survey was that 56 percent of respondents were not drawing down their savings in retirement. Instead, they were living on interest, Social Security, pensions and other income. The theory is that those who are good at saving for retirement have greater trouble parting with their money once they do retire. They have gotten used to cutting back, driving their cars a long time and not spending lavishly on themselves.

Depending on the type of retirement saving vehicle, consumers may have to begin drawing out of their retirement accounts, called a required minimum distribution, by age 70 ¬½. It is alright to dip into the principal rather than living off the interest, that is what retirement projections are based on, but the rate of withdrawal can be the difference between living in poverty and financial security. Experts used to feel a 4 percent withdrawal rate was safe. Many are now recommending 2-3 percent when determining how much needs to be saved before retiring. A lot depends on the rate of return your investments will earn, and of course how long you live.

Some steps to take toward a secure retirement include living modestly. That doesn't mean you need to deprive yourself or live like a hermit, but those who live modestly leading up to retirement become accustomed to a modest, inexpensive lifestyle and end up happier.

Maximize your contributions to a 401(k) or IRA savings plan and, if possible, pay off your mortgage before you quit working. If you work in a job that offers a traditional defined benefit pension plan think twice before you leave it. Or, if considering two different job offers with one providing a defined benefit plan and one a defined contribution plan, all else equal, seriously consider the defined benefit plan. These plans have been disappearing but if you are lucky enough to have one, it will provide guaranteed income in retirement.

This Consumer Reports survey has been conducted annually since 2007. A trend in the last five years is that people have become more worried about their futures. Job losses and low interest rates have sapped investment earnings and make it tougher to save. They did find though, that people end up pretty happy in retirement. There is a lot of worry leading up to it, but once they are there, people figure it out and are generally happy.
