Otte: Fifth hottest June on record in the books

For the ninth consecutive month, the area has experienced above normal temperatures. That combined with year to date rainfall that is two-thirds of normal shows that the region is under drought stress of a serious nature.

The average daily high in June was 91.9, 7.6 degrees above normal. This is above normal for July, usually the hottest month of the year. The average overnight low was 65.0, 2.6 degrees above normal. This gave us a monthly mean temperature of 78.5, 5.1 degrees above normal. This places June 2012 as the fifth hottest June on record. The hottest June was in 1953 when the monthly mean temperature was 83.0.

The highest temperature during June was the afternoon high of 106 June 28. The coolest temperature during the month was the morning reading of 42 degrees on June 1st.

There were several temperature records set in June. June 28’s high broke the old record for that date of 103 degrees set in 1968. It was not, however, the highest temperature ever recorded in June. That record is 110 degrees set June 11, 1953. The overnight low of 81 on June 26 broke the record high low temperature of 76 set in 1998. The low of 77 on June 27 broke the record high low for that date of 76 set in 1952 and 1980, and the low of 80 on June 29 broke the old record of 77 in 1952.

The precipitation report for June is pretty simple. Had it not been for two welcome rains in the middle of the month, there wouldn’t have been any rain for June, normally our wettest month of the year. During June, Milford Lake received 3.36 inches of rain and Junction City received 3.76 inches. Normal for June is 4.80 inches. Year to date, Milford Lake has received 11.07 inches of rain and Junction City 11.37. Normal precipitation through the first half of the year is 16.65 inches. The wettest June on record was in 1965 when 11.90 inches of rain fell. The driest June on record was the following year, 1966, when 0.20 inches of rain fell.

July is normally the hottest month of the year in the area and is usually dry compared to June. Neither prospect sounds good at this point in time.

Average daily highs throughout the month pretty well run in the 91 to 92 degree range. Overnight lows are pretty much around 67 degrees. Analyzing actual high temperatures since 1948, we see that the hottest day of the year has been July 18, with July 19 and 17 being the second and third hottest days of the year. The hottest temperatures ever recorded in Junction City were during July. On July 12, 13 and 14 of 1954, the mercury hit 114 degrees each day.

Rainfall normally starts to decrease in July. Average July rainfall is 4.07 inches. While many people think that August is the hottest month of the year, it is actually July. August starts to see temperatures decrease as we proceed through that month.
