Summer's here: Heat wave to sear Junction City this week

With temperatures forecast to reach triple digits in Junction City over the course of the next week, area residents need to be careful when working outdoors and keep an eye on their neighbors.

“We’re trying to make sure people are checking on the elderly,” said Erma Patterson, educational nurse with the Junction City-Geary County Health Department.

To keep cool, residents are urged to stay inside their homes, or find shelter in a building with air conditioning. There are also several cooling centers throughout Junction City that are open to the public during their regular business hours — Junction City Geary County Health Department, Junction City Municipal Building, Senior Citizen’s Center and Dorothy Bramlage Library.

The area was under a National Weather Service heat advisory Monday. Tuesday is predicted to be the coolest day of the work week at 96. The forecast calls for temperatures to reach 101 to 105 degrees Wednesday through Friday.

The National Weather Service warning, which is issued when humidity and temperature combine to make it feel 105 degrees or greater, urged those working or spending time outside to reschedule activities to early morning or late evening.

If you must be outside, wear light, loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. Also, take regular rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned locations and be aware of signs of heat stroke.

Just like their human counterparts, pets can also be overcome by heat. Lisa Junghans, director of the Junction City/Geary County Animal Shelter, said it’s best to keep pets indoors, if at all possible.

“My advice, if they have to go outside is to do it in brief, short intervals,” Junghans said. “Make sure there’s plenty of cold, fresh water and food. Junghans said the shelter isn’t directly impacted by hot weather, but the staff does receive several calls for pets distressed by the heat. Those callers are referred to area veterinarians.

While pets need plenty of fresh water, the average lawn will weather the heat just fine according to Geary County Extension agent Chuck Otte.

“Grass can survive three to four weeks of drought conditions,” said Otte. “An inch of rain every three weeks will keep it alive.”

Otte cautioned that for those who do irrigate their lawn, the best time to do so is in the morning to avoid creating conditions for disease to take hold in the grass.

Early in the day is also the best time to check garden and flowering plants. Otte said people often check on their gardens when returning from work and notice curled leaves. He noted this is a direct response to high temperatures and might lead to over watering.

Instead, check for heat stress in the morning and if water is needed, use an open or soaker hose to apply water directly to the ground slowly.
