Collins: Summer Reading is heating up

Readers all over our area have been busy working to reach their Summer Reading goals. Whether you are reading for the prizes or the great stories, keep it up.

We are nearing the half-way point in the Summer Reading program and we appreciate the support of our readers, partners, and sponsors.

Each year, the children's Summer Reading program is assisted by a variety of community partners and friends. The library would like to thank the city of Junction City, Dr. Ron Madl from K-State, Milford Nature Center, Junction City Boys & Girls Club, USD 475, Junction City Church of the Nazarene, the North Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility and the Friends of the Library for assisting us in providing quality programs for our readers. Also, several teen volunteers have committed time each week to assist with programs and shelve books. Our appreciation goes to these industrious young adults.

We offer our gratitude to our program sponsors Cox Bros. BBQ, Freddy's Frozen Custard, Subway Restaurant, Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers and the Breakfast Optimist Club of Junction City for their support in providing treats and prizes for readers. Our thanks to Millennium Bank for covering the printing costs associated the Summer Reading bookmark contest.

And, our thanks to The Daily Union and the Platinum Broadcasting radio stations for continued coverage and announcement of library events.

A big thank you to the kids, parents, and care givers who take time out of their schedules to take part in library activities and events. Children have been enjoying stories, songs, and crafts each Tuesday at preschool storytime. There are still a few openings in the afternoon and evening classes. Contact the library to register your child. Wild Wednesdays offer a story and music program for the entire family. Just come for the fun, no sign up needed. Cool off and check out a family film each Thursday at 2 p.m. Snacks are served so don't be late.

Earlier this month, more than 50 people joined library staff and professor Ron Madl from Kansas State University in North Park for a look at the night sky. We were fortunate to have a clear Kansas night and got to see Saturn, a nebula, a double star and the International Space Station as it passed over. What an amazing evening for star gazing. To learn more or to take in another night sky event, contact the North Central Kansas Astronomical Society at www.nckas.org.

This past Saturday, the staff from Salina's Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure shared stories and brought some wild creatures to visit the library. Children got a chance to see (and pet) a hedgehog, a rat, a desert tortoise and a millipede. Kids big and small learned all about animals who Dream Big! Check out the Rolling Hills website at www.rollinghillswildlife.com to find out more about the zoo and the new museum. This gem on the Kansas prairie is just 50 miles west on I-70 and well worth the trip.

More than 150 people crowded into the Junction City Church of the Nazarene for a program by Yo-yo Spinmaster Brent Dellinger last week. Unfortunately, Dellinger was unable to perform due to illness. The kids were great sports as they enjoyed some of the librarian's favorite stories instead. Dellinger agreed to perform his show at a later date. An announcement will be made as soon as plans are finalized for the event. Thank you for your patience. Please watch the newspaper and the library's Facebook page for the announcement.

There is still more fun to come. Next Friday night at 7 p.m. the Library ladies will be hosting a pajama party. Our favorite frog stories will be shared followed by snacks and a showing of Monsters, Inc. Join us for a hopping good time. You may wear your PJs. Teddy bears welcome. Contact the Young People's Department to sign up.

Red, White and Blue Crafts for Kids is getting a new look this year. On July 3, craft stations will be set up in the Community Meeting Room from 1-5 p.m. This come-and-go event will give busy kids a chance to complete their patriotic projects at their own pace. Sundown Salute events begin that evening. The community hamburger feed and the carnival both begin 5 p.m. Plan your day and take in some downtown family fun. You may pick up a copy of the full event schedule at the library.
