UPDATE: Florida plane crash claims Bramlage family

Friends of the Bramlages gathered around the trampoline in the family’s front yard on McFarland Road late Thursday afternoon, their heads bowed, tears flowing.

Flowers, a teddy bear and a pair of posters were left along the gate entry of the property as signs of how much the family impacted the lives of people in Junction City.

At about 12:35 p.m. Thursday, the Pilatus PC-12 airplane in which Ron, Becky and their four children — Roxanne, Beau, Boston and Brandon — were flying crashed in a rural, swampy area near Florida’s Lake Kissimmee, killing all six aboard. The Bramlages were returning from the Bahamas on their way back to Junction City’s Freeman Field.

They had stopped at the St. Lucie County International Airport and had taken off 30 minutes before the crash.

The track of the flight showed the aircraft flew northwest over Polk County, took a hard turn back to the southeast and turned sharply to the left before crashing. It was traveling at 26,000 feet before it started to experience problems.

A witness said she saw the plane “twirling around” but did not witness the crash. The scene where the plane came to rest was full of black smoke and the cockpit was in flames. The Bramlages were expected to arrive in Junction City at about 3:41 p.m.

Before that time, word of the crash started to spread through town.

Geary County Unified School District Superintendent Ronald Walker was one of the first to hear of the tragedy.

“They were a strong family that loved education,” Walker said later in the afternoon. “Our hearts and prayers goes out to their family members and we’re going to be here for them.”

Becky, 43, was the board of education president for the Geary County Unified School District 475.

“Becky was an outstanding friend and school board member,” Walker said. “She held nothing but the highest standards for our school district.”

Board of education member Dr. Ferrell Miller served with Becky and said the Bramlage Foundation made many contributions to the area.

“She was a great leader and I enjoyed working with her,” Miller said of Becky.

“Words cannot describe the pain we feel in this moment,” a press release from the USD 475 stated. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family for their loss, a loss that not only impacts us as a School District, but the entire county and state of Kansas as well.”

Walker called Becky a stalwart in making sure the district had the best technology and had the mission to put USD 475 on par with other affluent school districts.

“Her love of education was outstanding,” he said. “Her husband Ron also had a strong love for public education.”

Ron, 45, was a businessman who was involved in real estate, among other things. Ron is the grandson of the late Fred and Dorothy Bramlage. Fred, a 1935 graduate of Kansas State University and a Junction City businessman, was the lead contributor to the construction of Bramlage Coliseum, which is a multipurpose arena that opened in 1988 and is home to the K-State men’s and women’s basketball teams. The library in Junction City is named after Dorothy Bramlage.

Gery Schoenrock, who used to co-own a plane with Ron, said he was devastated to hear about the deaths of the family. Schoenrock was at flight school in Salina earlier today when he heard the news.

“Ron and Becky were dear, sweet friends. We watched Ron and Becky’s kids grow up. Ron and I and two other families shared a football box at K-State. We spent New Year’s Eve in Colorado and skied together. We flew together and boated together. They were just special people in our lives.

“I just can’t believe this would happen to the Bramlages. It’s a great loss for the community. I’m sure Ron and Becky would want us to make the best out of the situation — if anybody can make the best out of this — and not get too carried away.”

Most of those gathered in front of the Bramlages home late Thursday afternoon were members of the Junction City High School wrestling team. “We met over at Brandon’s house and kind of had a prayer session,” Junction City wrestling coach Laster said. “We talked about the good old days and just met to console each other.”

Brandon was a 106-pound freshman who took fifth at state this past season. He was one of three Junction City wrestlers to place at state.

“It’s a really big loss to us,” Laster said. “Brandon and his family meant a lot to me as well as to the community and the wrestling community. Brandon was a really likeable guy and I knew him really well. Not only did I have the opportunity to coach him but I also had the opportunity to teach him because he was in my personal dimensions class. He’s a good kid.”

The wrestling team made a decision for next year.

“The team has already said they’re giving the upcoming season to Brandon and his family,” Laster said. “He was a good kid and he’s going to definitely be missed.”

Walker said the whole family will be missed.

“This is a huge impact for the state of Kansas because both Ron and Becky were very active in Kansas as well as Junction City and Geary County,” he said. “It’s just a sad day all-around for the state of Kansas.”

Kansas State University also was feeling the effects of the tragedy.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the deaths of Ron and Becky Bramlage and their children today,” University President Dr. Kirk Schulz and Athletics Director John Currie stated in a press release this afternoon. “The Bramlage family holds a special place in K-State athletics and Ron and Becky have been loyal supporters and great fans of K-State. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bramlage family during this difficult time.”

Ron and Becky were both graduates of the university and members of the K-State Alumni Association, President’s Club, Foundation Trustees and Ahearn Fund.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The NTSB and FAA will be conducting investigations. There was debris found two miles away from the crash location and witnesses said the plane was sputtering and flying upside down.

At this point, there are only speculations on what could have happened, but Schoenrock had flown with Bramlage and said he was confident in Ron’s skills as a pilot.

“Ron had gone through simulated (flights) and it was an awesome plane. I had flown in it with Ron and it had all of the safety features you could imagine and then some. A Pilatus is one of the premier safe aircrafts. It should not have crashed.”

According to weather radars, there appeared to be thunderstorms in the area where the plane was flying prior to the crash.

“Ron was a certified instrument pilot and the plane was certified, too. This was a substantial aircraft he was flying and had all the safety features to fly through storms and bad weather. Both the aircraft and the pilot were both safe entities. It was just a tragic accident.”

The school district will have grief counselors available for students beginning Friday at Lincoln Elementary School, Junction City Middle School and the Freshman Success Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Walker said he hopes counselors also will be available Monday and Tuesday.
