Wood: Documentary tackles nation's weight

I have been receiving a lot on information about ''The Weight of the Nation'' project here in the office. Bringing together the nation's leading research institutions, ''The Weight of the Nation'' is a presentation of HBO and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

As part of the project, HBO will air a four-part documentary series exploring America's uphill battle with obesity. This series will air at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. This program can also be viewed online at theweightofthenation.hbo.com.

According to the research, people today work harder and take better care of their health than any previous generation. Yet, two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese. Being overweight increases your risk of chronic diseases including hypertension, type-2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

The estimated annual cost of obesity related illness is $190.2 billion, and 21 percent of annual medical spending is on obesity related illness. If you are overweight or obese, one way to reduce medical expenses would be to lose weight.

For this project HBO and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences have joined together to bring you the nation's foremost experts and definitive research on weight and weight loss. ''The Weight of the Nation'' explains how we got to this unhealthy place and how we can get to a healthy weight by overcoming the forces that drive us to eat too much and move too little.

Three years in the making, ''The Weight of the Nation'' answers crucial questions about yo-yo dieting, how metabolism functions, why stress affects weight and how to keep weight off forever.

One area of growing concern is childhood obesity. One out of three children is overweight or obese. Some experts fear this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Sugar-sweetened beverages, juices, and juice drinks are the largest source of sugar in the diets of children and adolescents. A fifth of teens drink three or more sugar-sweetened beverages every day, the equivalent of an extra meal. When we look at trends in portion sizes for meals and snacks, and the average time children spend in front of a screen, it is no wonder the percentage of children ages 6-11 in the United States who are obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to nearly 20 percent in 2008.

The project website listed above has some very interesting, and sometimes alarming, facts related to obesity and health issues. If you have some time, The Weight of the Nation, which the LA Times calls a wake-up call for America, might be a program worth watching. I know I plan to watch it online.
