Collins: Summer readers are out of this world

It's that time again. Kids are busy getting their final book reports done, field trips are out of the way and all thoughts have turned to summer. While your children have been busy finishing up the school year, library staff have been tasked with getting things just so for another exciting summer.

We will be celebrating all things night this summer. Children will ''Dream Big'', teens will ''Own the Night'' and adult readers will be checking to see what's ''Between the Covers''. Although you can learn about the upcoming program in the Learning Is for Everyone (LIFE) directory or pick up a calendar at one of the public service desks, you may still have some questions.

* How do I register? Online registration begins Tuesday on our website, www.jclib.org. You may also register in person beginning May 29. You may record your reading between May 29 and Aug. 5.

* Who can participate in the program? Readers from 1 to 100 are invited to participate. Young ones too little to read on their own may still be a part of the fun. Parents and caregivers will write down titles shared on their reading log.

* How much does it cost? There is no cost to participate. We do, however, rely on a host of sponsors. Please assist us in thanking our sponsors with your support and patronage.

* Do I have to read from a specific list? You may choose to read anything you please. No book reports, no tests, just read what you like. A suggested reading list is provided to adults registering for the program, but you may still select your own titles.

* Why should I register? In addition to losing yourself in some great books, readers will earn prizes for completing levels on their reading logs.

* How do I record what I read? Children get to choose whether they want to record titles of books read or the amount of time spent reading. Teens will record each time they complete 15 minutes of reading and adults will keep track of titles they read.

* What if I only read e-books or listen to books on CD? No problem, we recognize all kinds of reading. Feel free to record these titles on your reading log. If you need assistance in locating free digital audio books or titles for your e-reader, visit the Reference Desk.

* Do I have to have a Library card to participate in Summer Reading? Not necessarily, but we hope that you come in and get a card of your own. Although you may not be the traditional ''I-need-two-books-every-week'' reader, you may find that you will need your card sometime in the future. You will NOT need your library card number to create your user account for the online program.

* How do I get a Library card? Any Kansas resident age 4 and older may obtain a library card. Please bring a photo ID and proof of current address to the Circulation Desk. Parents will need to sign for children under the age of 14. You will receive your card and it will be ready to use instantly. Please keep in mind, new card holders will be limited to two items at a time for the first 30 days.

* What is there to do if I don't like to read? A host of story programs, family films, book discussions, classes and special events are held each week all summer long.

Young readers will not be without something fun to do. Tuesdays will be storytime day for kids ages 3-5. Wednesdays are wild at the library. A weekly story, craft, and music program will be presented at 10 a.m. for little people through grade one. The older kids will have their turn at 11 a.m. each week. Milford Nature Center will again be presenting Super Sleuths: Nature Investigation for readers ages 8-12 years. Every Thursday afternoon, cool off with a family film and a snack. And the weekends are filled with all kinds of special family events. Visit the Library or check out the LIFE directory for registration details and deadline for these events and more.

The online Summer Reading registration portal will open on Tuesday. Please join us on this maiden voyage as we enter the 21st century and offer virtual Summer Reading. We understand that we will likely experience a glitch or two on our journey. Please bear with us. Also, we encourage your feedback on the new format. Let us know what works well, what you like and dislike, and any suggestions for improvement. We hope this addition of technology makes your busy life easier and offers you even more time to enjoy reading.
