Otte: Flowering plants a good choice for Mother's Day

With Mother's Day barreling down upon us, many of you may still be scrambling for that perfect gift for Mom. Many of you will consider giving cut flowers and flower arrangements and that's fine, but you may also want to consider giving flowering plants. Unlike cut flowers that may last a couple of weeks at most, flowering bedding plants or planter boxes will last all summer long and often on into the fall.

Even though it seems like it's June already, remember it is only the second weekend of May and there is a lot of the growing season left. So why not get in the swing and get Mom some flowering plants. Selection of the flowering plants, either for a flower bed, or for a planter box, needs to be made with an understanding of where the plants will be growing. We are far enough into the season now that the cool loving flowers, like pansies, are going to be winding down. Focus on those plants that prefer, and can tolerate, warmer weather.

Are these plants going to be in full sun, part sun or shade? Flowers like begonias and impatiens need some shade. They may survive a few hours of full sun early in the morning, but put these in the heat and full sun of a summer afternoon and they will not be happy! Likewise, sun loving plants like marigolds, petunias and geraniums aren't going to do well in medium shade. Look at the tags and see what they need for sunlight. Those recommendations aren't casual comments, they are solid fact.

Also consider foliage plants to add accents. In shady locations, hostas are a nice perennial that will often grow where normal flowering plants can't. In sunnier locations, consider things like coleus and sweet potato vine to add nice contrasts. Dusty miller is another nice foliage accent with it's silver gray foliage, and if the winter is mild enough, they may even overwinter.

If Mom isn't able to take care of a large flower bed, consider a planter box or containers that will bring color all summer long and be much easier to care for. If taking the containerized approach, consider including some of the ferns or Dracena spikes to add some height or trailing accents to the flowering plants.

When picking out your flowers, try to get a color theme going. If you don't know what your Mom's favorite colors are, take a look around her house. You may get some ideas. Naturally, you can always ask the folks at the garden center for some ideas if you happen to be color coordination impaired as I am. A little bit of everything is sometimes nice, but a large mass of two or three colors of two or three different types of flowers can be a very striking as the season progresses.

If your Mom has a flower bed, prepare the soil and plant the plants as well. It makes the present even more special when YOU do the work! Remember that most Kansas soils benefit from the addition of organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, to the soil when it is being tilled up. Then plant the flowers and add a slow release fertilizer, like Osmocote to provide nutrients all summer long.

Adding a garden weed preventer or an organic mulch like shredded bark, will help control weeds meaning that your Mom has much less work to do other than watering and she can enjoy the flowers all summer long.

Let's face it, Mom's are pretty special people. You think fondly of her and you hope that she feels the same way about her. So take the time to create a nice flowering tribute to Mom so she can think about you all summer long while she enjoys the flowers!
