Our view: Romney fails several tests

Sometimes what a candidate doesn't say speaks louder than what is actually uttered. More than once now, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney has largely remained silent while supporters voiced outlandish opinions to which he should have objected — quickly and forcefully.

The latest example occurred Monday as Romney attended a town hall meeting in Ohio. A woman said that President Obama should be tried for treason and asked Romney how he planned to ''restore our Constitution in this country?'' Romney ignored the woman's outrageous statement about treason and delivered the usual rhetoric about the Constitution being divinely inspired. Romney even allowed the woman a follow-up question without addressing the issue of the president being tried for treason — a crime punishable by death in this country.

In March, conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown University student a slut, after she testified in favor of employers being required to covering birth control under their health insurance policies. In the ensuring outrage, Romney took his time before tepidly saying that wasn't the language he would have used.

A pattern has developed here. Romney is unwilling or unable to say anything that might offend supporters, no matter how extreme their views — though these are views we are confident he does not hold. The proper response to the woman claiming the president should be tried for treason would have been something along the lines of, ''M'am, I certainly have strong disagreements with this president on many policies, but I believe he is a patriotic American.'' The notion that the president has committed treason is held only by the fringe in this country.

A mainstream presidential candidate has an obligation to repudiate such views, especially when directly confronted with them. That's what transpired Monday in Ohio, and Romney failed the test.

In 2008 GOP nominee John McCain in effect responded to a similarly intemperate remark about Obama by defending the Democratic nominee as a decent family man with whom he had many disagreements. In contrast, Romney stood silent while a supporter, before asking him a question, spewed nonsense about trying this president for treason. That is a failure of leadership, in our view.
