Moyer: LIFE classes to tackle computer, online world

The Learning Is for Everyone (LIFE) community education program is dedicated to providing educational opportunities for the people of Geary County, Fort Riley and the surrounding area. It is based on the premise that the quality of life in any community is dependent upon the opportunity for the personal development of its individual citizens. LIFE provides a means for people to share their knowledge, exchange ideas and pursue their interests through lifelong learning.

According to education.com, community education can be defined as ''extending existing educational resources (including those of schools, colleges, and local organizations) into the community to serve all age groups and special target groups not ordinarily served by regular educational programs.'' The LIFE program and its partner-based structure fits this definition to a tee.

LIFE is actually an organization of organizations that includes public agencies, nonprofit groups and at times a few private sector entities. In addition to the library, the current partners include Barton County Community College, the City of Junction City, Cloud County Community College, Geary Community Hospital, Geary County K-State Research and Extension, Geary County Learning Center, Junction City Arts Council, Junction City/Geary County Health Department, Junction City Parks and Recreation Department, Milford Nature Center, Rock Springs 4-H Center and USD 475.

All combine to offer a body of classes, activities and events semester after semester that features a wide variety of activities to fit the diverse interests of the community. This includes the library which will be offering classes this summer on everything from how to self publish to how to troubleshoot a computer to an introduction to psychic phenomenon.

New this semester will be two classes designed to help put man's best friends on their best behavior. The AKC Canine Good Citizen and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes will both launch on May 15. Led by Stefanie Lamont, a graduate of the Animal Behavior College Training School and a member of the National Association of Pet Dog Trainers, both classes will stress basic skills and training for dogs and their owners to ensure good behavior and responsible pet ownership.

Also new will be several additions to the growing body of computer classes made possible with the new laptop computer lab purchased with the assistance of a grant from the Bramlage Family Foundation. This includes Introduction to Laptop Computing, which will premier on June 4, Sharing Is More Than Facebook on June 25, Email Basics on July 9, and Word 101 on July 18 and Aug. 15. The Computer 101 class will also be offered in three meetings this semester that will be divided between mouse basics, keyboard basics and a general practice session.

In addition to these and other new classes, several popular offerings will return to the class roster. These include Amateur Radio-An Introduction, Writing Your Family History, Basket Making, Crochet and Meditation & You.

One-on-one computer, Web and Internet instruction will also continue to be offered by appointment. These not only give patrons the opportunity for individual instruction but also the chance to learn the specific things they want to learn and to ask the questions they want to ask. It is also an opportunity to learn about some of the Web-based library resources that are available including the Foundation Center Online and the Mango Languages database.

All of the classes and activities included in the summer semester are listed in the LIFE directory that premiered last week and in the program website at http://www.jclib.org/LIFE.htm. As usual, they are grouped by topic so participants can see all of the offerings in a particular area such as Outdoor Life, Science and Nature, etc.

The directory also includes a feature on some of the speaking programs and meeting facilities that are available through the participating agencies. In addition, a separate section with information pertaining to the more formal education opportunities available to adults is also included.

Community members who have something they would like to learn or knowledge they would like to share are all welcome to pursue these interests through the LIFE program. This is what puts the ''community'' in community education and also what proves that Learning (really) Is for Everyone.
