Harris: Early explorers called Junction City 'home' for a night

Driving down Interstate 70 in my air conditioned car, flying over ribbons of concrete, I have often pondered how those old pioneers crossed this sea of grass in covered wagons. How did they know where they were going? What hardships did they encounter? Who were those intrepid souls who were the vanguard of the coming white tide behind them?

The area that is now Geary County was visited by three noted explorers in American History. They were Jedediah Smith, John C. Fremont and John W. Gunnison.

Jedediah Smith was one of the most famous of all the mountain men. In that company Jim Bridger, Tom Fitzpatrick and Kit Carson are among the few to be considered his equal. He first went to the Rocky Mountains to trap beaver in 1821 with the Ashley-Henry Fur Company. Other important members of this party were Jim Bridger, David E. Jackson and Moses Harris. In trapping beaver, the mountain men explored vast areas of the American West.

In 1824, Smith and his trappers were in the Rocky Mountains south and east of Jackson's Hole (Grand Teton National Park), where he discovered the South Pass through the mountains in Wyoming. This was a major discovery as it would later allow covered wagons to cross the Rocky Mountains. Emigrants used this pass going to Oregon and the California Gold Rush.

In November of the next year, he led about 60 trappers from St. Louis to the Rocky Mountains by going up the Kansas River. They were planning to go up the Republican River to winter at the Pawnee Indian village, near the Nebraska border. But a severe winter slowed their progress. The slow pace caused them to use up more supplies than expected and they lost one third of their mounts.

This expedition ground to a halt at the forks of the Kaw (Junction City) on Jan. 1, 1826. Smith ordered his men to winter in the area while Moses Harris and several others went back to Missouri to procure mounts. Trapper Robert Campbell wrote that ''they wintered along the Republican Fork, and suffered much for the want of provisions.''

Fresh mounts arrived in February and the party followed the Republican River to the Pawnee Village. The Pawnees were gone, but the Smith party made themselves at home until the Pawnees returned several days later.

Mountain men like Smith, Bridger, Jackson, Harris, Fitzpatrick and Carson did much to explore the American West from the Missouri to the Pacific, from Mexico to Oregon.

In 1858, when Robert Henderson retired from the Army at Fort Riley, he claimed 160 acres of land south of Junction City. He called the farm ''Logan's Grove''. On the claim he discovered an old log cabin in very bad repair. He repaired the old cabin and later the Coronado obelisk was erected near it. Old timers, and later historians, speculate that it is possible that the cabin was built by members of Smith's party. The 1951 flood swept the old cabin away.

One of the most famous American explorers in American History came through this local area in 1843. He was John C. Fremont and is known in history as the ''Pathfinder''. He came through Junction City on the second (of five) exploration trips to the West. He had 39 men and had a caravan of 12 two-mule wagons, a four-wheel wagon, a 12 pound cannon and a large herd of animals.

He had left the Oregon Trail south of Topeka heading west on the south side of the Kansas River. Progress was slow as he had to bridge the many creeks as he labored his way westward. On June 7, his expedition reached McDowell Creek and on the next day he reached the forks of the Kansas River and camped here two days. On June 10, he crossed the Smoky Hill River and camped on the point between the Republican and Smoky Hill River where Junction City is located today.

On June 11, his expedition moved on, following the south side of the Republican River. Tom Fitzpatrick and Lucien Maxwell, his mountain men guides, left the river somewhere between the Alida and Milford area, and continued through the northeastern corner of what is now Dickinson County. They guided Fremont to Fort St. Vrain, a trapper's outpost in Colorado, where they were to meet Kit Carson. On old maps this is called the Fremont Trail.

Ten years later, in October of 1853, Fremont, with two others, followed the Military Road to the newly established Camp Center, which became Fort Riley the next year. He was on his fifth and last expedition to the west. His men had preceded him with wagons and supplies on the old route on the south side of the Kansas River. They had passed through Camp Center about a month before and were waiting for him to join them some where near the Saline River.

About Oct. 28, Fremont went through Camp Center, hardly stopping on his way, hurrying to catch up with his men. On Nov. 1, his expedition left the Saline River on their way to Colorado. This expedition was a disaster. His 25 men became snowbound near what is now the town of Creede, Colo. Ten of his men perished and the rest barely made it to civilization.

In the California Gold Rush, Fremont became one of the richest men in America. In 1856 he became the Republican Party's first candidate for president of the United States but lost to Buchanan. During the Civil War he was a headache for Lincoln, who had appointed him a Major General, but had to sack him twice.

The third explorer is better known in Colorado than in Kansas. In 1853, Capt. John W. Gunnison was sent by the government to explore railroad routes to the west. From Topeka he followed the Fremont route on the south side of the Kansas River. On July 3, his party crossed Clark's Creek and the next day they crossed the Kansas River at Camp Center, now Fort Riley.

They stopped a short time at the new fort, leaving the post in the afternoon and crossing the Pawnee (Republican) River by ferry. Later in the day they camped by a spring between the Smoky Hill and Republican Rivers. He continued up the Smoky Hill River to near Salina and then turned south to the Santa Fe Trail and on to Colorado.

While exploring in Utah he divided his men into two groups. On Oct. 26, 1853, his party of 11 men was attacked by Ute Indians at Lake Sevier, Utah. Gunnison and six of his men were killed. Today, vacation travelers to western Colorado will find the Gunnison River, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River and the town of Gunnison to mark his presence in Colorado. Near Lake Sevier, Utah, a marker has been erected where he and this party of explorers were killed.

All three of these intrepid souls came through our local countryside, blazing trails across the prairie, making maps for others to follow, and leaving their mark in our Geary County history.
