The retiring of tradition: Long-time nurse hanging up her uniform

On June 15, Jolene Stackhouse will retire after nearly 40 years as a registered nurse, 31 of them at Geary Community Hospital and 29 as the nurse manager of the intensive care unit.

Born and raised in the Junghans' clan in Junction City, Stackhouse has proven herself to be an invaluable nurse leader and role model for quality intensive care nursing.

She's our woman in white — a by the book, no-nonsense nurse with very definite views on nursing decorum. She is the only nurse left at GCH who still proudly wears white. Even as a young nurse just starting out, she joined other white-wearing nurses Muriel Glessner, LaVerne Allen, Lois McCandless and Ardith Dunkel in their call for nurses to wear white and look professional.

''Just the other day, Dr. (Kimberly) Wirths came up to me and told me how much she liked that I wear white because it's so professional,'' Stackhouse said. Dr. Tom Craig also frequently makes the same comment. ''It's true. I get that compliment a lot. I think if you dress more professionally, it reflects in your attitude and behavior. It is also easier for patients and visitors to identify nurses from everyone else in scrubs.''

''There is a place for work and a place for play,'' she said. ''People see me outside of work and seem surprised that I can relax and have fun, but I never mix the two.''

Stackhouse has seen many good changes in health care in the last 30 years. Perhaps the biggest change in her professional life was the building of the new state-of-the-art Tom and Barbara Fegan Intensive Care Unit, which opened in January 2009, and in which she was instrumental in the layout and design.

While tradition is important to her, so is the improvement in collaboration among the medical team. Doctors have come to depend on the nurses' assessments of their patients since nurses are with the patients for much longer periods of time, she said. Those providing other health care or therapy, such as respiratory care or physical therapy, also now integrate well into the health care team.

Access to the information on the patients has also improved dramatically. ''Computerization made access to patients' test results, history and medications so much more accessible,'' she said. ''We used to have to document everything by hand and now we can access and enter patient information with a few strokes on the keyboard. We can see patient's medications and history from the last time they were in, so we don't have to go through that again.''

She also sited improvements in patient monitoring, such as machines that automatically take and record blood pressure and oxygen saturation without the nurse manually performing these functions.

Specialization, such as that in cardiac care, has changed the type of patients seen in Stackhouse's ICU. ''It used to be that heart attack patients would stay a week with us, but now we don't even keep them (at the hospital),'' Stackhouse said. ''They are taken directly to a hospital with a catheterization lab so that treatment can begin without delay.''

Stackhouse will always be a wonderful ambassador for nursing. She was quick to quote that nursing was voted the most trusted profession for 12 of the last 13 years of Gallop surveys. ''To anyone considering nursing,'' Stackhouse said, ''I'd say it's such a caring, rewarding profession. Sometimes the hours are long and you're on your feet a lot, but I still love nursing even after 40 years. It pays well, but you have to have the desire.''

While her husband Earl is still working for the Geary County Sheriff's Office, she plans to work in her flower garden, play more golf, travel to see their son Sean and their grandson Seth, and do some volunteering. She may even come back to work a few hours a month after settling into retirement.

While it's hard to imagine Geary Community Hospital without Stackhouse's leadership and skills, we wish her the best in her well-deserved retirement.
