Lady Jays make history, beat Topeka High 3-2

The Junction City Lady Jay soccer team is officially in the record books.

Junction City beat Topeka High 3-2 Thursday at Al Simpler Stadium to record its ninth win of the season, the most ever in school history — girls or boys. The win came in dramatic fashion as Topeka High's Reagan Vigola tied the game at 2-2 with 1:20 to go. Not to be outdone, Junction City's Jessica Schellhase scored the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds remaining after a freak play. Topeka High was called for a handball from 35 yards out with 20 seconds remaining. Jessica Meadows fired a shot that Topeka High's goalkeeper could not handle and Schellhase was there to clean up the mess.

''I didn't think the ref was going to call the handball,'' Schellhase said. ''I started yelling 'Handball, handball' and I just started sprinting to the box. I saw the goalie come out and I knew she deflected it and I just turned around there the ball was and I just swung my leg around and it went in.''

The win not only stops a three game skid that saw them tie 1-1 with Seaman and lose to Hayden and Shawnee Heights. It also improved Junction City's record to 9-2-1 on the year.

''Everyone was kind of down on themselves,'' Schellhase said. ''We knew we had to come out and make history. Again.''

Junction City already set a school record earlier this season after jumping out to an impressive 8-0 start. Then came a 1-0 loss to Hayden, a 1-1 tie at Seaman and a 2-0 loss to Shawnee Heights.

''We really wanted this win after a tie and two losses,'' Junction City forward Kenidy Springer said.

Topeka High took a 1-0 lead just three minutes and 10 seconds into the game when Trojan Maria Munoz dribbled past the Junction City defense and beat goalkeeper Chloe Weston to the left of the goal. Junction City responded less than five minutes later. Schellhase received a pass from Jessica Meadows 25 yards out and she headed it to Springer down the seam of the defense and she kicked it past the Trojan goalkeeper to tie it 1-1.

''That's kind of what we've been looking for for a lot of the season,'' Junction City coach Scott Clark said. ''We've been looking for that particular ball between those two when they get in the goalbox and we got it there.''

Springer scored her second goal of the game with 17:38 remaining in the first half when a Schellhase shot ricocheted off Topeka High's goalkeeper and she drilled a shot to the back right post.

The ninth win this season is not only the most in a single season, but it's also two more than the program had in its first eight years of existence. On paper, the win may not look as impressive considering the competition, but the victory itself? Now that's something to be proud of.

''I'm really happy for the players,'' Clark said. ''It's been a great season. They've done something that no other team has done. That's a significant event and something they should really be proud of. I'm really, really happy for them. It feels great.''

Junction City narrowly edged Topeka High in shots on target, 8-5. Clark didn't say he didn't expect a tough game from Topeka High despite the Trojans' two total wins this season. He said he respected how hard the Trojans played his team.

''We really had to put together everything we could just to win this game,'' Clark said. ''Hats off to Topeka High for coming out and playing a really inspired, great game. I'm proud of my team for hanging in there and playing tough.''

Next up for Junction City is Washburn Rural on senior night. The Junior Blues are historically one of the best teams not only in the Centennial League, but in the state. This year is no different and Clark said the game will be a huge challenge for his players.

''Defensively, we'll have to have a great game,'' Clark said. ''We'll get them ready for it and hopefully we'll give them a great game out here at Simpler on the last game of the year.''

Junction City hosts Washburn Rural at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Al Simpler Stadium.
