From the editor: Ready for open roads?

For the last few weeks, I couldn’t help but be jealous of all those people out on their motorcycles. Unseasonably warm spring temperatures, plenty of sun and an eagerness to get the cruising going knowing summer is almost here.

There’s really nothing like riding a motorcycle. The wind in your face, the open road all around — it is truly a thrill and feeling I have never experienced doing anything else.

One of the most exciting aspects of heading back to Wisconsin late last week was knowing my motorcycle was coming with me back to Kansas, ready to ride on the roads of the area. I can’t wait to ride around Milford Lake or take a leisurely cruise to Manhattan, Wamego or Abilene.

But, for those who aren’t motorcycle riders, there are things we notice while riding that you don’t while driving a car.

You may think it’s the wind, sun, beautiful scenery or the temperatures, but really, I’m talking about the conditions of the roads.

On a motorcycle, there’s no way you can ignore the potholes, cracks and bumps. More so on a motorcycle, you try to avoid these possible dangers at every straight away and turn.

When you approach a stop light or sign, you feel the wear of the road under your tires and feet. The conditions, whether good or bad, of intersections and alleys are extremely noticeable on a motorcycle.

Now after a few days of riding around some of Junction City’s 155 miles of roads, it is obvious, road repair here has been lacking for many years. I know, I am not saying anything you all don’t already know. Even before hopping on the motorcycle, the poor conditions of the roads were noticeable.

However, riding the bike around has made the problem much more apparent.

I must admit finding out the city budgeted and will spend $450,000 on road repairs is music to my and everyone else’s ears. The list of repairs and roads that need help is long.

Although, there is no way to do them all with this year’s allotted funds, this first installment of joint and crack filling, concrete work and paving is a step in the right direction. The process must start somewhere and it appears that it has under the city’s Engineering Department.

But there are still going to be problems. That amount of money doesn’t go far when it comes to infrastructure repairs.

My thought, with the city’s financial debt and woes, will road work to this extent occur every year or is this a stop-gap measure to work on the worst roads?

According to Greg McCaffery, Junction City’s assistant city manager, this is only the beginning of what he calls the treatment effort to preserve the city’s roads and extend their life.

The last time significant street work occurred was in 2007 and now the city is trying to catch up with the typical maintenance and repair to keep both old and even newer roads in proper condition.

That’s why McCaffery said he will propose an earmark for 2013 road projects to the tune of another $500,000. That includes $125,000 in concrete work, $275,000 in surfacing and $100,000 in joint and crack filling.

He said there is no doubt it will take a few years to get the city’s streets back to where they need to be. McCaffery said many of the streets in Junction City are at the “critical” stage and this effort gives the city the biggest bang for its buck.

The plan seems reasonable. We all know you can’t do everything at once. That would require too much money and too many road closures.

While it is just the beginning, it certainly will be good to see some work being started in May and know that a focus has been placed on the city’s infrastructure.

This summer, we’ll see you out on the improving roads of Junction City, whether you are in a car or on a motorcycle.

For many in this community, I believe they will be thrilled to see some roads closed for awhile in the coming years for much-needed repairs — even if it does put a damper on our idea of “the open road.”
