JC wins doubleheader against Washburn Rural, improves to 5-3

Junction City is hitting its stride.

Not only are the Blue Jays on a four-game winning streak, they also have outscored their opponents 46-16 in the last four games. On Friday, Junction City won both games of its doubleheader against Washburn Rural at Rathert Stadium to improve to 5-3 on the season.

''I love to win games but I'm more interested in our process. Are we getting better? I think we took a small step forward today,'' Junction City baseball coach Heath Gerstner said. ''With eight games into the season, not even halfway there. We can't get hung up on wins. We need to get a little bit better each day. We're far from perfect.''

Junction City may not be perfect, but they looked the part in the first game, winning 15-5 in five innings. According to Kansas high school rules, a game is called if a team is up 15 runs after three innings or 10 after five innings.

The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame when Tyler LeClear batted Nick Heath in. Washburn Rural tied the game in the top of the third and had two runners aboard with one out before Tyler Cox, Cody Devin and LeClear recorded a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Junction City took the lead back when Will Ervin, who started the game at pitcher, drove Heath home in the bottom of the third. LeClear notched a second RBI when he singled Devin home to put the Blue Jays on top 3-1 going into the fourth inning.

Washburn Rural tied the game at 3-apiece in top of the fourth to set the stage for a monster scoring inning from both teams. The two teams combined to plate 12 runs with 10 of those coming from the Blue Jays.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, Ervin was hit by a pitch to send Pete Ruiz home. James Denton then singled Heath and Devin home to extend Junction City's lead to 6-3. Washburn Rural made a pitching change and sent in Tyler Palmer to replace Cody Botkin, who pitched 3.1 innings, giving up six runs. Palmer went on to give up seven more runs on hits by LeClear, Cox, Ruiz, Heath and Devin. All in all, Junction City sent 14 batters to the plate and recorded eight hits and three walks.

Junction City sent Ruiz to the mound in the top of the fifth with the Blue Jays leading 13-3. Ruiz gave up two runs but recorded the victory. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth when Cox and Jeremy Thomas singled runners home to put Junction City up 15-5.

''That was a bizarre game,'' Gerstner said. ''I felt like it was a tight game the entire game. I felt like any team could have broken it open and any team could have won the game. I thought our at-bats got a lot better as the game went on. We made some adjustments. I thought Will threw pretty well for the most part and kept us in it. We had a couple big hits, a couple errors and before you know it, it's a big inning. It could have happened to us as well as it could have happened to them.''

In the second game, Junction City took the lead in the bottom of the second when LeClear, who posted the win at pitcher, batted in Ervin. Washburn Rural took the lead in the top of the fourth 2-1. Junction City had another big inning, this time in the fifth.

''We pride ourselves on being a good bunting team. I really give credit to Tyler Cox who laid down that nice bunt. They happen to let the ball get away. That always causes a big inning. It was a huge play for us and we were able to hold on,'' Gerstner said.

The Blue Jays tallied five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good, 6-2. Washburn Rural scored one in the top of the sixth to cut the Blue Jays lead to 6-3. Ruiz was sent to the mound for the save and almost let the Junior Blues back in the game. With one runner aboard, Washburn Rural's Skylar Curtis hit it a two-run home run over the left center field wall. The hit came after Curtis fouled off a ball that was nearly caught by LeClear. Ruiz retired three out of the next four batters to secure Junction City's fifth win of the season and the fourth in a row.

''I was definitely nervous,'' Gerstner said of the last inning. ''Pete hasn't been throwing this year. We've been working him back in. He's an energetic emotional guy, probably too much. He always makes me nervous but he's always been our best. He throws well, he throws strikes and he loves that situation. Was I nervous? Without a doubt. All sorts of thoughts were running through my head but I just knew we needed three outs.''

Gerstner said his teams batting has improved the last few games and ''It's a process.''

''Our guys have really bought into our hitting philosophy,'' Gerstner said. ''We have intense practices. We come in and do things the right way. Guys are doing a great job of making adjustments.''

Junction City's next game is Tuesday at Emporia at 4 p.m. Gerstner said his team needs to work on their focus before facing the Spartans.

''Fourteen innings for high school kids in one night is a lot of pressure. It's a lot of baseball, a lot of energy and it takes a lot of skill to do that,'' Gerstner said. ''We need to be more mentally tough. We need to not take pitches off and not take innings off. We need to get better every inning.''
