Meadows sisters forge bond through soccer

If Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love, then Junction City is the City of Sisterly Love.

Jessica and Cassidy Meadows are sisters on the Junction City girls soccer team that has started the season 7-0, the best start in school history. The two have combined to score five goals and a handful of assists for the Lady Jays this season.

Jessica, a junior team captain and all-time Lady Jay leader in goals scored with 20, started to play soccer at the age of 5. Before she knew it, her sister Cassidy, a freshmen, joined her. The two are so close, they call each other best friends.

''My sister has been one of the biggest influences in my life,'' Cassidy said. ''Playing with her is like a real honor because she's the person I look up to the most in everything, not just sports. I love playing with her. It's really fun to play with her. It's really easy to communicate with her because she understands me.''

The sisters both play center midfielders in coach Scott Clark's 3-5-2 formation, calling for each to help with the defense, and offensive sets.

''It's a lot easier because you know your sister pretty well,'' Jessica said. ''I know where she's going to be at and I know what she's thinking when she has the ball. It's a lot easier to communicate like she said. It works out pretty well.''

Clark said it's really special to have sisters on a team who have as good of chemistry as the Meadows sisters have.

''There are certain ways you're going to develop chemistry as a sibling that's just harder for other teammates to develop,'' Clark said. ''I know that those, at center midfield, have good chemistry but I also know that there is more there. I think that's the exciting part is the possibilities of how they're going to develop together.''

Jessica and Cassidy, daughters of Gary and Charlene Meadows, have been playing soccer for more than a decade. They said they remember their dad being really big into baseball and he decided to sign the two up for America's past time before playing soccer.

''I don't think that's really our thing,'' Jessica joked. ''He realized it wasn't really our thing so he put us in soccer and we kind of went from there and we realized how much we really liked it.''

The sisters agreed their parents have been very influential and key in their soccer development.

''(Gary) really loves soccer and he really wants us to succeed,'' Jessica said. ''I know he really wants us both to go college for soccer. He's always looking for more opportunities from different colleges for us for soccer and that really helps out a lot. He's always been our No. 1. My mom comes out (to games) and takes pictures.''

''Without our dad giving us this opportunity I don't think we would've come this far,'' Cassidy said. ''We'd never be where we're at today. I'm thankful for them and I'm also thankful for all the coaches that have given us opportunities.''

Family has always been important to the Meadows as Jessica and Cassidy have been inseparable since day one. When asked who their favorite soccer players are, Jessica replied Freddy Adu while Cassidy simply said ''Jessica.''

''I have a lot of friends in my grade but the person I can trust the most and be honest with and will never judge me is Jessica. She's my best friend,'' Cassidy said. ''She's been there for me since we were little and I couldn't ask for a better sister.''

Jessica and Cassidy have always been competitive, whether it be soccer, basketball or board games. When it comes down to it, the two agreed Cassidy is probably the more competitive of the pair.

''Whenever we would play board games and I would win, she would sit there and flip to board and run upstairs,'' Jessica said.

''I still don't like losing,'' Cassidy added.

Losing isn't something Junction City is accustomed to this season, as the squad started 7-0-0. The two agreed Clark should be named coach of the year in the Centennial League this season. Clark has taken a program that went 7-136 in its first eight seasons to 8-8-1 two years ago and 6-10-1 a year ago.

''He's a really great guy,'' Cassidy said. ''He's like our best friend in a way. He knows how he wants to play. He wants us to do our own thing and he really understands how to play and it's fun playing with him. With him being our coach it's a good experience.''

Jessica said she respects Clark's loyalty to the Junction City girls soccer program.

''He lives in Manhattan I know the coach for Manhattan quit last year and I know he was offered the job,'' Jessica said. ''He could have easily taken that (job). That would have been a lot easier for him since he lives in Manhattan but he stood by our side. I think that says a lot about how much he really cares about us. We all really, really respect him. He's one of the reasons I really look forward to practice and games every day.''

Clark said he's always dreamed of having good center midfielders, and he said finally has that in the Meadows sisters.

''If you win the middle of the field, you generally have a chance to win the game,'' Clark said. ''Man, that's just awesome to think about the rest of this year and next year, having those two dominating in the center midfield. The possibilities for us are really good having those two develop together in those two positions.''

The attitude and expectations for Junction City girls soccer has changed since Clark's arrival. The team has raised the standard for Lady Jays soccer even higher this season, outscoring opponents 19-3 in seven games, including 13-0 at home.

''I expect us to at least go 12-0,'' Jessica said. ''That's our goal. That's our team goal is to go at least 12-0. I know we can do it. I expect a lot of good things from this team.''

''To be honest, I think we can go all the way if we wanted to,'' Cassidy said. ''If we really set our minds to it, we could.''

First things first, the Lady Jays have to take care of business against Emporia Friday. The contest will be just the third road game for Junction City this season.
